School is officially back in session at the City’s first nine community schools. Over the past couple of weeks, community school coordinators have been attending back-to-school night events and speaking with families and students about the exciting community schools initiative and what they can expect with a community schools designation from the city.

This week Mayor’s Office of Education (MOE) staff participated in back-to-school nights at South Philadelphia High School, F.S. Edmonds Elementary, Kensington Health Sciences Academy, Cramp Elementary, and Tilden Middle School. Currently, community school coordinators are assessing community resources to determine the schools’ best assets and most pressing needs in order to best support our students.

On Thursday, September 29th, community school coordinator William and Healthy Schools coordinator Yadira went to back to school night at Cramp Elementary. They had the chance to meet with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation rec center leader, Tammy, and learn more about Schmidt Playground—a play space across the street from Cramp.

They also stopped by Cramp Elementary’s new state-of-the-art hydration station which is sure to keep students healthy and hydrated throughout the day!

Down in Southwest Philly, MOE staff, Louisa and Miguel, went to Tilden Middle School to help community school coordinator Regina and Healthy Schools coordinator Greg answer questions about pre-K and community schools. Though it was a rainy night, Tilden had a great turnout, displaying the commitment and enthusiasm of the families, community, and school staff.

Principal Brian Johnson held a parent information session after families met with teachers, giving MOE staff the opportunity to share more information, as well as let parents know what they can do to get involved.

A highlight of the night was when a group of Tilden students interviewed the community schools coordinators for the school newspaper. It was a great opportunity for the students to learn more about their new coordinators and vice versa. All-around, back-to-school night was a huge success and a great opportunity for school, family, and student collaboration!
