1. The Mayor announced the Philadelphia Fire Department’s Lt. Joyce Craig Fire Safety Camps.

This week, the Mayor encouraged Philadelphians to sign up their children ages 14-18 years old for the Lt. Joyce Craig Fire Safety Camps. The camps are each a week long and held in August at the Hunting Park Rec Center. GoPuff is known nationally for delivering snacks late at night, often to college students. It’s also an original Philly startup. 3. The Mayor announced the new “A Running Start Health” plan for early childhood health.

“A Running Start Health” is the City’s plan for early childhood health, from birth to five years old. The plan focuses on specific critical areas, like reducing asthma and sleeping related deaths for infants. This week, the Mayor announced the plan and asked companies and organizations in Philadelphia to join with the City in implementing the plan. You can read “A Running Start Health” online from the Department of Public Health.

4. Mayor Kenney unveiled CAMP Philly, a new partnership with the local YMCA and the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Last year, Mayor Kenney wondered if the City could offer a sleep-away camp for Philly kids. This year, the City unveiled CAMP Philly, a partnership between Parks and Rec and the Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA, the local YMCA network. CAMP Philly offers a week-long experience in the Pocono Mountains for participants of local rec center programs. Parks and Rec awarded 200 scholarships to local kids. You can learn more about CAMP Philly from the Department of Parks and Recreation.

5. The Mayor joined the Mayor’s Office of Education to announce the two newest community schools.

An initiative funded by the Philadelphia Beverage Tax, the Community Schools initiative started with nine schools. This year, the program expanded to include two more, Samuel Gompers School and George Washington High School. Participating schools retain a full-time dedicated coordinator who creates and oversees partnerships and programs at the school location to meet some of the most pressing before, during, and after school needs of both students and families. Some schools focus on healthy eating, other schools focus on building safe routes for kids to walk to school. In every case, each community school increases equity and opportunity across Philadelphia. You can learn more about the Community Schools initiative from the Mayor’s Office of Education.
