An impending snowstorm didn’t keep Kensington Health Sciences Academy students and families away from attending the Freshman class’ inaugural pinning ceremony on February 8, 2017. Sponsored by community partner, Gear Up, students were joined by school staff, City Year corps members, and Antonio Romero, KHSA’s community school coordinator, who worked together to make sure the night was memorable for families.
Mayor Kenney greeted more than 60 ninth grade students as they processed into the cafeteria for the ceremony. The procession was a nod to the walk the students will make three and half years from now when they graduate. Once students were seated, Mayor Kenney kicked off the program by sharing inspiring words and making his own pledge to help the students succeed.
We're going to do everything in our power to ensure you have resources you need to graduate, I know you can do it! #phled #CommunitySchools pic.twitter.com/8qKfYrAU5g

Students also heard from Officer Smith and Principal Williams who encouraged them to ask for help when they need it and not to give up on themselves. Next, it was time for the students to take their official pledge to graduate within four years.

Once the students pledged their commitment to their education, they had to find an adult or friend to recite the support pledge while pinning a 2020 pin, their graduation year, on their shirt. The event concluded with a delicious celebratory dinner provided by Gear Up.
