Logo of Philly FeastThe banners are up. The donkeys have landed.  The political movies are playing. In other words: The Democratic National Convention is just around the corner!

Next week, July 25 – 28, Philadelphia will host this important moment in political history. As Philadelphians, we have the unique opportunity to watch the convention unfold in our home town — as well as enjoy all of the exciting events and activities set to occur practically on our doorsteps!

As Mayor Kenney said: “Trust me, Philly, you don’t want to miss this.” Here are five things you really don’t want to miss!

  1. History: How can you pass up the opportunity to be part of history? The City of Brotherly Love is no stranger to political conventions. Philly hosted its first recognizable convention – for the Republican Party – back in 1856. And, the last time the Democrats convened here was in 1948.
  2. PoliticalFest: The popular festival from Republicans’ convention in 2000 is back and better than ever. Between July 22-27, kids and adults alike can visit seven participating locations to engage with interactive exhibits that celebrate America’s political history. Head over to the Convention Center’s replica of the Oval Office to sit behind the president’s desk – and be sure to explore C-SPAN’s educational bus parked right outside the National Constitution Center!
  3. Donkeys Around Town: You’ve probably noticed that several four-legged conventioneers arrived in Philly a few weeks early! 57 fiberglass donkeys, each intricately painted by a local artist to represent a participating convention delegation, have set up shop in different locations across the city. Participate in the app-based scavenger hunt to find each one and win all sorts of prizes, from free cheesesteaks to tickets to sporting events!
  4. United We Eat: On Monday, bring family and friends – and a hearty appetite – to Old City for Philly Feast: United We Eat, a daytime version of the popular Night Market food truck festival. And on Wednesday, celebrate with your friends and colleagues at the largest Center City Sips this year, set to occur at Dilworth Plaza, Comcast Plaza, and Centre Square.
  5. Deals for Locals: Best of all, you don’t need to be a delegate to enjoy all of these perks and more. Search for the hashtag #DNCDeals on Twitter and Instagram to stay informed on exclusive deals that Philadelphia shops, restaurants, and other local businesses are offering in celebration of this historic week!
