Firefighter Dana J. Mueller, a five-year veteran of the Philadelphia Fire Department, will receive the 2017 “Firefighter of the Year” award. Mueller, a member of the “B” Platoon at Ladder 12, will receive this prestigious award for his valiant rescue of an unconscious child from the second floor of a burning building in May. He did so in the midst of heavy heat and smoke while the incident commander was ordering members to evacuate due to deteriorating conditions. The child later succumbed to injuries suffered in the fire. Mueller’s disregard for personal safety in removing the child from the rowhouse exemplifies the Philadelphia Fire Department’s commitment to dedication and service.
