PHILADELPHIA – Three members of the first cohort of Community Schools have partnered with the Philadelphia Marathon to encourage their students to participate in the Kids Fun Run taking place Saturday, November 19. Forty-seven children from William Cramp Elementary, William Tilden Middle School and Edward Gideon School will participate in the event.

“The Fun Run is just one of many ways we are working with other city departments to bring new, exciting opportunities to students that they otherwise wouldn’t have access,” said Director of Community Schools Susan Gobreski. “A major component of the community schools approach is improving the physical well-being of our children because we know that when students are well-nourished, properly hydrated, and physically active, they perform better in the classroom. We hope this experience will show students that exercise is not only physically and mentally beneficial, but also fun!”

The Fun Run is a short-distance, non-competitive event for children ages 6-12. The Run was designed to show children how running can be enjoyable, providing participants with a positive experience and encouraging active lifestyles and physical fitness. Participants will even have the thrill of crossing the same finish line as the marathoners. Since it’s never too early to start exercising, a Diaper Derby and Toddler Trot will allow children age 3 and under to join in the excitement.

“The Philadelphia Marathon Race Weekend isn’t just for adults,” said City Representative & Marathon Executive Director Sheila Hess. “We encourage Philadelphians of all ages to participate in the Fun Run, the Rothman 8K, or to volunteer, or even to just cheer on your fellow Philadelphians.”

Those interested in participating can register here. The fee is $15 per entrant and registration is open until the race begins. Marathon registration ends Friday, November 11.
