“As Philadelphia mourns with the people of Oakland, it’s also important to examine how we can prevent similar tragedies form occurring here. In our city there are unlawfully converted buildings and underground clubs, and while L&I works hard to track down these hazardous locations and enforce the Fire Code, they can’t do it alone.
“The holiday season is the biggest time of year for parties in unsafe and misused spaces. This year, we call on everyone who owns or manages properties to take responsibility for their safe use, on partygoers to reject invitations to fire traps, and on anyone who notices this kind of suspicious activity at a property to speak up. Especially where there are crowds, low lighting, loud music, late hours, and alcohol, the right licenses, permits, and inspections save lives. ”
Citizens can call 311 to report concerns about properties, and refer to the L&I website and Open Data Philly to determine properties’ open licenses, permits, or violations. Property owners can learn more about how to get and stay in compliance from the L&I website and L&I District Offices. Always call 911 to report an emergency.
