PHILADELPHIA – On Thursday, May 4, 2017, Mayor Kenney will visit Edward Gideon School, a City of Philadelphia designated community school, as part of the National League of Cities (NLC) Mayors’ Institute on Advancing Education and Health through a Community Schools Strategy. Mayor Kenney, along with the teams representing Houston, TX; Toledo, OH; Caldwell, Idaho; Rancho Cucamonga, CA; and Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, will meet with school partners and parents to discuss community school priorities and new programs, such as the development of a new community garden, a newly acquired washer and dryer to launder student uniforms, a new program to address food insecurity, and more.
This tour will close out NLC’s Mayors’ Institute which was held from May 2-4, 2017. NLC elected to host the Mayors’ Institute in Philadelphia because of Mayor Kenney’s commitment to expanding community schools. To date, nine public schools have received a community school designation by the City of Philadelphia, and this initiative is funded by the Philadelphia Beverage Tax.
