1. The Mayor announced the route for the next Philly Free Streets event.

Philly Free Streets closes miles of city streets to cars, opening up the thoroughfares so people can walk, bike, and play along the route. Last year’s event, Philly’s first ever, brought thousands of participants hailing from 90 percent of Philadelphia zip codes enjoy popup art, dancing, music, and shopping. 2. Mayor Kenney joined neighbors and the Philadelphia Police Department to celebrate National Night Out.

An annual event fostering police-community relations, National Night Out occurs nationwide and features block parties, cookouts, games, and other events where residents and the local police officers who serve them come together. This year, Mayor Kenney visited festivities in South Philly around 4th Street and Washington Avenue. 3. The Mayor helped surprise two Philly high school graduates with college textbook scholarships.

Local anti-violence activist Anton Moore is founder of Unity in the Community, a community organization devoted to positively changing lives in South Philadelphia. Unity in the Community also provides scholarships to local students. This week, Mayor Kenney joined Anton and others to surprise two students with scholarships to help pay for college textbooks. 4. The City announced that TreePhilly is now accepting grant applications from community groups.

TreePhilly provides free trees for Philadelphians to help rebuild and grow the city’s urban forest. This week, the City announced an open grant application period for local groups; each of the five grants are worth $500 and provide 50 to 100 trees so that recipients can host tree giveaways in their neighborhoods this fall. Applications for community organizations are due August 25.

5. Mayor Kenney joined LGBTQ veterans in opposing President Trump’s ban on transgender Americans serving in the military.

Last week, Mayor Kenney and Director of the Office of LGBT Affairs Amber Hikes issued a statement condemning President Trump’s recent statement that he intends on banning transgender Americans from serving in the military. This week, the Mayor and Director Hikes stood with LGBTQ veterans at an event at City Hall pushing back against Trump’s statement.
