In between the cookouts, block parties, outdoor film screenings, and other festive summertime pastimes, the work of  building a stronger Philadelphia in every neighborhood continues.

2. The Mayor celebrated and honored Philadelphian Colonel Guion Bluford, Jr., who was the first African American in space.

Just days after the 48th anniversary of the breakthrough Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969, Mayor Kenney honored Col. Guion Bluford, Jr., for his many contributions to Philadelphia and the world. Col. Bluford, a Philadelphia native, was the first African American in space. He flew several missions with NASA, including his historic first mission aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1983. To celebrate Bluford’s contributions to science and history, local students created a mixed media art exhibit in City Hall, “Philly’s Native Son in Space,” together with the Mann Center for the Performing Arts. The exhibit is free and open to the public on the second floor of City Hall now until August 4.

These partnerships then create programming meeting the unique needs of each school’s students, families, and surrounding neighborhood. This week, Mayor Kenney announced that technology company IBM would partner with the Mayor’s Office of Education to bring robotics and coding education to seven of Philadelphia’s community schools.
