The last week of April was a busy one with the NFL Draft bringing thousands to the historic Parkway for revelry, merriment, and, of course, sports!

A lot of other events and programs happened, too, so #PhillyMayorThisWeek recaps some moments you might’ve missed.

Take four minutes to get updated!

1. Mayor Kenney observed Earth Day by joining community members in planting a vegetable garden at a neighborhood Free Library.

On Earth Day, the Mayor was busy planting a veggie garden at the David Cohen Ogontz Free Library in North Philadelphia. The garden was in honor of Florence Cohen, a civil rights and community activist in Philadelphia.

2. The Mayor celebrated the opening of Bartram’s Mile.

Another Earth Day event, Bartram’s Mile officially opened, and the Mayor joined the community to celebrate. The newest 1.1 mile stretch of the Schuylkill River Trail connects Southwest Philadelphia to the city’s extensive trail system, increasing access to parks and open spaces.

3. Mayor Kenney helped cut the ribbon at the new MLK Older Adult Center in North Philadelphia.

Mayor Kenney attended the grand opening of the Martin Luther King Older Adult Center this week.  This North Philadelphia center is one of several Philadelphia Parks and Recreation centers across the city that provides a wide range of programming for older Philadelphians.

4. The Mayor took questions from Philadelphians as part of the monthly #AskKenney Twitter chat.

A regular feature of the Kenney Administration, #AskKenney is a digital town hall where Philadelphians ask the Mayor questions. Topics this week ranged from Philly’s tech scene to the Mayor’s favorite sports moment (that was the standing ovation Pittsburgh Penguin Mario Lemieux got from Flyers fans following his cancer treatments). The most controversial question this round, however, may have been how the Mayor likes his pretzel: with spicy brown Gulden’s mustard and lemon water ice.

5. Mayor Kenney kicked off the NFL Draft in Philadelphia.

Flanked by Governor Tom Wolf, Mayor Kenney officially welcomed thousands of visitors and Philadelphians to the Parkway as the NFL Draft started. Locals from neighborhoods across Philly came to enjoy the NFL Draft Experience, a free three-day, family-friendly football festival with games, attractions, autograph signings, sports activities, and sports history memorabilia. Attendees also watched the draft as it happened at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art on large screens placed strategically along the Parkway.
