A regular feature of the Kenney Administration, #PhillyMayorThisWeek highlights five events you might’ve missed.

This week, the Mayor praised good government reforms at the Committee of Seventy’s annual post-election luncheon, announced the Philadelphia International Unity Cup would happen again next year, celebrated the energy and innovation of 23 Philadelphia-based companies named some of the fastest growing in the nation, broke bread at a dinner held at one of the city’s first community schools, and encouraged residents to use City resources to foster diversity and inclusion citywide.

 1. The Mayor spoke at the Committee of Seventy’s luncheon, a celebration of democracy following Election Day each year.

To a crowd of civic, political, and neighborhood leaders, Mayor Kenney touted the good work of the Committee of Seventy, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization devoted to good government. At the event, the Mayor praised Seventy for its 112-year history serving the citizens of Philadelphia. He touched on the group’s early work against ballot stuffing and talked about more recent history, too, saying Seventy “led the fight to defend campaign financing limits, established a City Board of Ethics, and made lobbying — and the spending associated with it — a matter of public record. I was proud to work on these reforms with the Committee during my time on City Council.”

2. Mayor Kenney announced at the Philadelphia International Unity Cup closing reception that the soccer tournament would become an annual tradition.

Following the success of the first-ever Philadelphia International Unity Cup, which celebrated and brought together the city’s immigrant communities over a months-long World Cup style soccer tournament, the Mayor happily announced that the event would become an annual tradition. Earlier this month, the Mayor attended the final championship match; the team representing Ivory Coast took home the first PIUC championship trophy.

3. The Mayor praised the 23 Philadelphia companies contained in this year’s Inc. 5000 list.

“The superheroes of the U.S. economy” populate this annual listing from Inc. Magazine. This year, 23 Philadelphia companies made the list, including Philly’s own Saxbys Coffee. The Mayor said he was proud of Philadelphia’s growth and spirit — and that so many local companies were considered “some of the fastest growing in the country!” You can learn more about opportunities for local businesses by following the Department of Commerce on Twitter.

4. The Mayor visited Murrell Dobbins CTE High School’s community dinner.

One of Philadelphia’s first of nine community schools brought about thanks to the Philadelphia Beverage Tax, Dobbins held a community dinner that promised a full turkey dinner with trimmings and desserts — and even line dancing and card making! The event also allowed students at Dobbins to show off skills they’re learning by way of presentations. While breaking bread with some of the attendees, the Mayor — who insisted on walking a box of food to the event himself — observed, “It’s really heartwarming to see everyone happy, eating good food, and sharing in each others’ company.” The Mayor brought fish to the dinner.

5. Mayor Kenney urged Philadelphians to use City resources to advance principles of diversity and inclusion citywide.

In order to equip Philadelphians with tools to foster peace and embrace of diversity, the City and Mayor’s Office distributed resources for the city’s immigrant population, on how to report hate crimes, and what to do if residents encounter bigotry. “Recently, our country and our city have witnessed hate crimes, intimidation, and damage to public and private property,” the Mayor said. “So many Philadelphians are asking how they can stand up for their fellow residents, their colleagues, their friends, and their neighbors.”

One of the primary tools residents can use is the Philadelphia Human Relations Commission, which investigates allegations and enforces Philadelphia’s strong anti-discrimination laws. The PHRC can be reached at 215-686-4670 or pchr@phila.gov.
