In a city of 1.5 million people, a lot can happen in a week.

With that in mind, we’re starting a weekly recap to highlight five of the things you might have missed, #PhillyMayorThisWeek.

1. Mayor Kenney attended a Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations hearing.

At the hearing, held in response to recent incidents of racism affecting the city’s LGBT community, Philadelphians shared their stories and gave testimony to the commission. The Mayor encouraged those who didn’t get an opportunity to share their testimony via email before November 1, 2016, via email to pchr@phila.gov.

2. Mayor Kenney signed an executive order clarifying restrictions on gifts to City employees.

“These changes represent an important step toward the ultimate goal: a comprehensive set of guidelines for thousands of City employees who regularly interface with the public,” the Mayor explained.  “By making the ground rules for those interactions clear, we can ensure the public’s trust in their government.” KYW1060 Newsradio’s Pat Loeb reported on the Mayor’s order, saying he “kept a campaign promise and tightened up the rules on gifts to city employees.”

3. New citizens celebrated preparing to cast their first vote ever.

Together with the Committee of 70 and the Welcoming Center of Pennsylvania, the Mayor took part in the First Vote Philly celebration . While greeting the partygoers, the Mayor called voting for the first time “a special tradition that is at the heart of the American experience.”

4. Mayor Kenney gave remarks to the Forum of Executive Women.

A professional organization devoted to increasing the number of women in leadership roles, the Forum recognized 19 companies doing business in the Philadelphia region for having boards with 25 percent or greater women members. At the gathering, the Mayor proudly highlighted that over half of his top appointees have been women.

5. The Free Library unveiled this year’s One Book, One Philadelphia selection, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” by Mark Haddon.

One Book, One Philadelphia promotes literacy throughout Philadelphia with programs devoted to a single title in the hopes that Philadelphians will read, enjoy, and share their thoughts about the book. So far, the Mayor is approximately halfway through 2017’s selection, saying it’s, “very good!” At the kickoff celebration, the Mayor also got to greet local schoolchildren — and borrowed a pair of ear muffs off of one of them for an impromptu public service announcement about preparing for winter weather.
