What we do

Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) connects the City’s residents to the natural world, to each other, and to fun physical and social opportunities. We manage historically significant Philadelphia events and special venues, and we work with communities and organizations, leading capital projects and introducing creative programming.

Philadelphia’s large, diverse parks and recreation system provides something for everyone. Listed below are some of facilities and programs we’re responsible for:

  • 300+ neighborhood parks, rec centers, and playgrounds
  • 220 miles of trails and 40 historic sites
  • 60 community gardens, farms, and orchards
  • 3 environmental education centers
  • 500+ baseball, softball, football, and soccer fields
  • 75 pools (71 outdoor, 4 indoor)
  • 400+ basketball and 250+ tennis courts
  • 5 ice skating rinks and 6 golf courses
  • 25 public computer centers

Kathryn Ott Lovell
Commissioner

Kathryn Ott Lovell was appointed commissioner of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation by Mayor Jim Kenney in January 2016. As commissioner, Ott Lovell oversees 700 employees and more than 10,200 acres of land, 500 buildings, 225 miles of trail, 250 playgrounds, and thousands of programs and events throughout Philadelphia's parks and recreation system. Prior to her appointment as commissioner, Ott Lovell served as the executive director of the Fairmount Park Conservancy and as chief advancement officer for the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. Ott Lovell currently serves on the boards of the following organizations: the Friends of St. Hubert, the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, and St. Francis de Sales School.
