Clean and efficient energy is one of the 8 visions outlined in Greenworks, our plan for a more sustainable Philadelphia. Our city is working towards a future in which all Philadelphians use clean and efficient energy that is affordable and meets their needs. On June 28th, Mayor Kenney signed a bill adopting new building codes for commercial and multifamily properties. Building Codes are the biggest opportunity to reduce energy waste in new construction and renovation. However, you don’t have to wait to build or purchase a new home to cut back on energy costs and improve efficiency! Reduce your home’s carbon footprint with these strategies:
1) Contact PECO for a Home Energy Assessment. The fee is $25 and includes reporting on energy efficiency in the home, advanced diagnostic testing, installation of free energy saving products, and more.
2) Eligible PECO customers can request free home energy assessments through the In-Home Energy Checkup program. An Energy Advisor will complete a home visit then offer recommendations to save money and reduce energy waste. Participants receive free energy-saving items such as LED light bulbs and Smart power strips.
3) Explore rooftop solar as an option for your home. The Philadelphia Energy Authority runs Solarize Philly, a program that offers free solar assessments and discounted pricing to low and middle-income residents.
4) Check out Greenworks on the Ground, our guide to energy waste reduction and cost savings for individuals. Tips range from smaller, inexpensive tasks that can be achieved in an afternoon to longer term projects such as tree planting. Read more below.
