PHILADELPHIA – Tonight marked the final meeting of the School Reform Commission (SRC), which will be replaced by a mayor-appointed Board of Education in July.

Mayor Kenney released a statement following the meeting:

“I thank the current and past members of the School Reform Commission for their service on behalf of the children and families of Philadelphia. The SRC’s vote last November to return control of our schools to Philadelphians was a pivotal moment in our city’s history. In recent years, the School District has made steady progress in terms of academic achievement and financial outlook, and I look forward to working with the incoming Board of Education and other stakeholders to continue this critical work. Nothing is more important for the future of our City than ensuring all children have access to quality schools in every neighborhood.”

The incoming Board of Education released the following statement:

“We thank the Commissioners for their work, especially during this transition period.  We look forward to assuming the great responsibilities of governance over Philadelphia’s public schools. Philadelphia’s success depends on our schools, and we will work with all Philadelphians – students, educators, families, community members, city and state leadership – to build on the School District’s recent progress. Together, we can ensure that all Philadelphia’s children have access to the quality education they deserve.”
