Native plants are spreading their roots and getting ready to bloom across the park system. Some of these plants are a part of the Plants Make Positive Places (P3) Native Garden program. The P3 Native Garden program increases the diversity and health of our landscapes.

Every year, the P3 Native Garden Program provides selected Park Friends groups and recreation centers with:

  • plant material
  • resources
  • training

Locations are eligible to take part if they have gardens on Parks & Rec property and submit a project application.

Two of the P3 native plants that are finishing their spring blooms are golden ragwort and foamflower:

  • Golden ragwort is a perennial that attracts the minute pirate bug that feeds on pests, such as aphids.
  • Foamflower is an early food source for insects.

False indigo is blooming now and is attracting a wide array of pollinating insects. All the P3 Native Garden program plants provide beautiful floral displays and benefit our natural environment.

We will begin accepting applications for new P3 garden sites in June. For more program information or to get involved, email Dan Feeser at daniel.feeser@phila.gov.

Stay tuned for summer blooms!
