For many City employees, yesterday was one of the highlights of the year. It was PAL Day at City Hall! This is the one day each year where a group of local students get to work directly alongside City Hall employees.
PAL Day at City Hall is a tradition that is now in its 48th year. Students from the Police Athletic League (PAL) visit City Hall and learn more about city government by shadowing a City employee for the day.
Similar to how PAL seeks to build stronger relationships between students and police officers, PAL Day at City Hall allows public servants to mentor students and help them learn about careers in local government.
In the morning, the students were greeted by the Mayor and other City officials before participating in a speed networking round and enjoying lunch.
Then, they went to join their coworkers for the day and get a ‘behind the scenes’ sneak peek at the daily operations of one of the nation’s largest cities.
Even the Mayor, a former PAL student himself, participates with a student who serves as “PAL Mayor for the Day.”
In the Mayor’s Communications Office, we had the pleasure of being joined by Khalil. Each student is assigned to a City employee who works in an area that best matches the student’s interests.
Khalil is a student at Dobbins studying graphic design, and he wanted to learn more about a career in design. So, it was only fitting that he was assigned to our digital team.
Here are some of the things that Khalil did during the day:
- Shoot a Q&A on Snapchat with the Mayor in his office.
- Meet some of the City’s digital experts to explore his interest in graphic design.
- Advise on tweets the Mayor sent from his Twitter account.
Overall, this year’s PAL Day at City Hall was another huge success. We thank Khalil and all of the students who participated.
We’re already looking forward to next year’s event!
